On Saturday, 18 Nov 2006, 6 members of the championship 1977 Magnum Softball Team reunited at a Chicago Home Run Inn Pizzeria. The line-up consisted of Rich Budo, Mark DeMato, Dave Fiedor, Walter Forst, Tom Volk and myself. Topics covered in this gathering of the minds included Crude Oil, the Enron Scandal, Global Warming and Government Corruption.

Actually the converstaions were about the high price of car oil changes, Tom Skilling the Weatherman, the progressively warmer winters of Chicago and the saga of Randy Aderman’s timecard.

Not to mention, bowling.

Geraldine of Garfield Ridge

September 15, 2006

Gregoryology is desparately seeking Geraldine of Garfield Ridge, Chicago (located 41°49.0′N 87°45.6′W). Geraldine is the half sister of my mother and these photos are my only hope of locating her. She contacted our family several years ago, but we do not know how to reach her. Geraldine is our only link remaining to my mother’s side of the family.

Thank you for any help on this!

Crossmaglen Hotel

August 12, 2006

On St Patrick’s Day, 2006, a new hotel opened in one of the unlikeliest tourist destinations in Ireland – Crossmaglen, Co Armagh. It is called the Cross Square Hotel.
Crosssquare
According to The Irish Times, It cost over $2.8 million (€2.2 million or £1.5 million). Its owner is Gene Carragher. The hotel is in the main square of Crossmaglen, named in honour of the late Cardinal Ó Fiaich, who was born in nearby Cullyhanna.

For the past three decades, south Armagh and Crossmaglen have had a lot of adverse publicity. The “notoriety factor” of the town may well be a draw for overseas tourists, as has happened in Belfast and Derry. Crossmaglen has been described by Belfast journalist Malachi O’Doherty as “a southern town that had the border laid down on the wrong side of it.”

The hotel is the first for a long, long time in Crossmaglen, for something like 100 years, in fact, as Anthony Lennon says: “The previous hotel in the town, the Commercial Hotel, was on the opposite side of the square and it was an old aunt of my grandmother, Bridie Carragher, who owned it.”

With several Gregory and Harvey families residing in the Crossmaglen/Newry area, the new hotel will be the ideal rest area for visiting American cousins.

UPDATE: On the weekend of September 02, 2006, the Cross Square Hotel was delighted to have their first wedding in attendance. Karen Rogers and Eoin McCambridge were the happy couple who had a wonderful day and night in the newest Crossmaglen hotspot.

Cheers!

Windows Killer

July 21, 2006

Apple has “only” 75% market share in the portable music market because it was rewarded for creating a great product, yet everyone is trying to produce a true iPod Killer.

On the other hand, Microsoft creates the most inferior products, owns 90% of the market because they licensed it and yet, no one really cares about producing an alternative solution. Windows users demand “choice”, but that one choice has been stuck with 2001 technology. They don’t want to be locked into one manufacturer, yet no one seems to complain about being locked into one software manufacturer.

With Apple creating the bridge that allows suffering Windows users to cross over, Microsoft continues to force feed their users that the Microsoft Way is the Only Way.

The business sector continues to believe that any Microsoft solution is the safe (can I say this) and conservative decision, despite the huge amounts of money they spend on IT support.

Soon a CFO who had bought a Mac Mini for his wife will find out how little one would “need” Windows and may finally ask himself the question: “If our multi billion dollar company went to an all Apple solution, how much money will we save and how much more secure will our data be?”

At what point must Apple’s market share reach before OS X can officially claim the title of “Windows Killer?”
