Michael J. Mohan & Sophia Anderson

John Gregory, of Creggan Parish, had only one son, John S. Gregory. He married Rebecca Hunter in 1874. Rebecca Hunter Gregory’s mother, Rose Devlin (1828-1893), re-married Michael Mohan (1830-1893) after her husband, John Hunter passed away in Ireland. This created a very strong bond between the Gregory and Mohan families.

Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Cook, IL, USA

Notes: Calvary Cemetery, located on the border beween Chicago and Evanston, IL on Sheridan Road, is the oldest existing cemetery that was established by the Archdiocese of Chicago. The first burials at this cemetery were in 1859. Many Irish Catholic churches favored Calvary.

The first Mass was offered at Calvary Cemetery on the Feast of the Assumption 1865. The celebrant was Rev. Patrick Flannagan who was late for the event because his buggy had mired in the heavy sand of the north shore. He later became pastor of St. Anne Church, Englewood, IL in 1877. The Gregory Family were among the original parishers of St. Anne’s Church. The church is no longer standing.
